BIG SLANDER CLAIM

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LOS ANGELES, July 11. A SNZ42.Bm claim against the industrialist, Mr Howard Hughes, for alleged slander, has been filed by Mr Noah Dietrich, a former business associate. The suit alleged that Mr Hughes slandered Mr Dietrich, who is aged 83, in a telephone news conference last January, during which Mr Hughes denied the authenticity of a purported autobiography, written by Clifford Irving. During the conference, Mr Hughes referred to another associate as a ‘‘no-good dishonest son of a bitch, and he stole me blind,” according to the suit. It adds that later in the conference Mr Hughes compared Mr Dietrich to that individual. Also named as defendants are the Hughes Tool Co., a public-relations firm, Carl Byoir and Associates, and Richard Hannah, an executive of Byoir and Associates.
