Miners and industrials firmer in Australia

Share prices were firmer on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Trading was brighter and though rises were made in all sectors the best gains came from established mining issues and selected industrials. In Melbourne Poseidon rose 50c to 1400 c, in Sydney, 70c to 1420 c. Gold stocks in Melbourne were stronger. Peko rose 30c to 1070, Bougainville 13c to 365 c, G.M.K. 5c to 125 c, and Hill 50, 2c to 35c, but Wattle Gully fell 2c to 28c after a corrected report on the Copetown diamond prospect. In Sydney, nickels were stronger. Great Boulder firmed 25c to 195 c, W.M.C.

rose 5c to 335 c and Metals Exploration rose 8c to 300 c. Utah rose 13c to 448 c and M.I.M. 10c to 340 c. N.B.H.C. Holdings also rose 10c to 425 c. C.R.A. gained 30c to 750 c.

In Melbourne B.H.P. gained 15c to 1275 c, Philip Morris rose 20c to 1500 c, while Comalco at 380 c, Dunlop at 128 c and Herald at 445 c made smaller gains. Permewan Wright recovered from Monday’s falls at 50c. Leviathan gained 2c to 218 c, but 72,188 shares changed at 215 c in a special sale. Sportscraft Holdings has claimed it holds 25 per cent of Leviathan issued capital. In Sydney banks were stronger with the Bank of N.S.W. firming 20c to 800 c, the C.B.C. advanced 8c to 290 c and the National Bank rose 5c to 380 c. Woolworths and David Jones both gained 5c to 113 c and 195 c respectively, and Myer rose 3c to 238 c. E.Z. Industries and Slater Walker rose 15c and 11c to 385 c and 204 c. Oil issues saw little trading Megellan rose 5c to 200 c, Woodside-Burmah eased the same to 280 c as did Santos. Ampol exploration rose 4c to 144 c but Bridge fell 2c to 34c.
