Seeded men, women win first squash game

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. There were no major surprises in the first round of the Rothmans New Zealand squash racket championships in either men’s or women’s events yesterday. The eight men’s seeds won through with only the seventhseeded T. Colyer (Henderson) being extended to four games. In his match against G. Bowen, of New Plymouth, Colyer lost the first game. 9-10. but went on to take the next three, 9-1, 9-1, 9-6. In the women’s competition, the title-holder. P. Buckingham (Hamilton), had to go the full five games before beating R. Garvey (Remuera). She lost the first game. 3-9, but took the next two comfortably, 9-4, 9-4. However. Mrs Garvey fought back well to take the fourth. 9-3 but then appeared to lose con centration. and Mrs Buckingham won the last game without conceding a point. MEN First round.—T.
