Challenge to exporters

New Zealand exporters faced a considerable challenge in selling to the E.E.C. countries and Britain after Britain joined the E.E.C. on January 1 next year, because E.E.C. protective tariffs would be phased in and British preferences for New Zealand goods phased out, said the New Zealand trade commissioner-designate to Paris (Mr P. E. Donovan) in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Donovan will leave New Zealand on July 22 to take up his new post. Mr Donovan told members of the export committee of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association that some E.E.C. countries imposed quantitative import restrictions on some goods. He also said that some goods would be excluded from some of the countries while being allowed into others. However, he said, the Briitsh market was expected to achieve a new “dynamism” after joining the E.E.C. and this could well lead to new opportunities for New Zealand exporters, including manufacturers.
