Oil slick at beach
An oil slick, first spotted at sea in Pegasus Bay on Thursday, left big blobs of oil in a long strip about Ift wide along the high-water mark on the South Brighton beach on Saturday. A spokesman for the Marine Department said that arrangements would be made this week to have the slick removed, and that investigations would be made to determine its cause. Mr B. N. Norris, honorary ranger for the Wildlife Division of the Internal Affairs Department, said that the slick would certainly constitute a big danger to penguin colonies in the area. “Oil seems to affect penguins more than any other sea bird,” Mr Norris said. “They come ashore at night and if they are affected by oil, they don’t return to sea during the day.”
