Escaper found in wardrobe
(New Zealand Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, July 8.
After more than nine weeks at liberty, an Auckland prison escaper, James Pomare, was recaptured in New Plymouth on Saturday.
Pomare was found hiding in a wardrobe in a flat after the police had cordoned off the area. Within feet of his hiding place an automatic pistol and ammunition were discovered. The arrest was made without incident.
Five other occupants of the building were also taken to the police station for questioning. About 5 p.m., one of the five, an Auckland man, made a break from an office
on the second floor of the police station. A constable set off the alarm bell, and the man was brought down in a flying tackle in the doorway.
A man was arrested on charges of being idle and disorderly and wilful damage. A young woman was also arrested on a charge of being idle and disorderly. They and Pomare, will appear in court tomorrow.
Pomare’s arrest and the visit to New Plymouth at the week-end of an Auckland motor-cycle gang had unexpected results.
The police took possession of five motor-cycles and two cars believed to have been stolen. A sixth motorcycle, without number plates, was found today hidden beneath bushes at Oakura, nine miles west of New Plymouth.
