‘PRESS’ CHESS Hillmorton unbeaten
Hillmorton High School, which managed only one and a half points in “The Press” chess teams competition last year, has provided one of the features of the tournament this year. After three rounds it is unbeaten. Hillmorton took a clear lead in its zone by beating the previously undefeated Riccarton High School team, 4-2.
Shirley Boys’ High School A, the winner last year, seems certain to reach the final again. But Burnside High School gave it a very stern contest last week.
On board one, S. Thorton (Bumside) played intelligently to draw with V. A. Small, the Canterbury schoolboy champion. Shirley gained the advantage on boards five and six, but P. Crooks (Burnside), a third former, gained the decision on board four after both teams had discussed the final position. Some players have been taking a long time over their moves and in one game that required adjudication, only 15 moves had been made by each player in the two hours. Clocks will be used in the final rounds.
Because of difficulties, St Andrew’s College has yet to play two of its scheduled fixtures. However, the chess master said that these matches will be completed in the next fortnight.
