Price record in brewery bid
In one of the most toughly contested take-over struggles in recent times, the British millionaire hotelier, Maxwell Joseph, has succeeded with his record sB7sm bid for Watneys Breweries, but only after he had twice increased his offer.
The tense struggle lasted 14 weeks, and was declared unconditional only after Watney’s directors had checked all votes.
The two groups will form a hotel, beer, and spirits combine with annual sales of more than $1315m and profits around sl3lm.
