Most leaders weaken on Australian markets

The financial year opened on a dull note on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Leading issues on all sectors were weaker and trading was slow.

CRA fell 40c to 720 c and Poseidon 50c to 1400 c. Consolidated Gold lost 20c at 560 c. Bougainville at 370 c, MIM at 335 c, and Utah at 440 c all lost 10c.

Queensland Mines rose 25c at 300 c, while WMC Renison, and Kathleen Investments were unchanged. Peko Wallsend dropped 30c to 1055 c. GM Kalgoorlie eased 13c at 120 c, Emperor lost 4c at 130 c.

Magellan, which announced an agreement on Friday to supply Califronia with gas from the Palm Valley field, came in for profit-taking. The shares touched 200 c before recovering to 215 c a loss of 5c on the day. Flinders Petroleum, which has an interest in the Palm Valley field, fell 3c to 12c. CSR lost 10c at 530 c. CUB gained 2c at 526 c after Friday’s report, and Herald rose 5c to 455 c. Phillip Morris fell 10c to 1460 c and Rothmans 5c to 315 c. CSR eased 4c at 530 c and Fairymead and Pioneer sugars dropped 5c each at 335 c and 340 c respectively. Breweries were slightly firmer, Tooheys gaining 5c at 325 c and Castlemaine rising 10c.
