Familiar ships in new role

SHIPPING NEWS

A Christchurch resident, Mr P. Stead, who is employed at Lyttelton, received news yesterday of several vessels which once belonged to the New Zealand Merchant Service. These ships, which were nearly all well known at Lyttelton, are still plying their trades, some under Asian ownership. One of these, the former coastal vessel Katui in which Mr Stead formerly served, is now called the Cindee.

The Cindee, under a smart new coat of paint, sails between Singapore and Indonesia. As New Zealand’s Merchant Service has decreased, it has supplemented the overseas shipping roster considerably, as the following list would indicate. Mr Stead's correspondent, and former shipmate, said that in Singapore he had seen simultaneously the former Kaimai, Kawatiri, Konini and Kanna. Two more vessels, the Karamu, and Koonya (from the Australian group) were also due. Three large overseas traders, the Waitemata, Waihemo, and Wai rat a, were also seen recently in Asia by the same correspondent. Also in the offing were the Konui and Kaltangata. making a total of 12 former Union Company vessels to reinforce the overseas shipping interests which were making good use of them, even if New Zealand could not do so, the correspondent said. * S: *

The 6595-ton Danish motor vessel Ontario loaded 315 tons of mainly rye grass seed for Chile, at Lyttelton yesterday. On this trip, the Ontario wUI take about 5000 tons of New Zealand produce to Valparaiso and Antofagasta. The Ontario discharged Chilean timber at Tauranga, and 31 tons of wine (Auckland transhipments). At Tauranga the Ontario loaded milk powder and butterfat and more milk powder at Whangarei. From Lyttelton she will go to Melbourne to load ingots, butter and tinned butter, before recrossing to Bluff to complete with cartoned and carcase meat. Owned by the United Steam Siip Company of Denmark. the modern refrigerated vessel is under charter to the Oregon Pacific Company, Ltd, According to Captain M. Thompsen, the Ontario and another vessel, the Labrador, are cadet ships in the company’s fleet of 40 vessels. Aboard the Ontario are 16 cadets (12 training to be deck officers, and four for the engine room). A schoolmaster is carried aboard. The company’s fleet included passenger ships, Captain Thompsen said. * * *

A Lyttelton Harbour Board employee, Mr- S. W. Blenklnsop. of Lyttelton, has just retired after 21 years service in the board’s craft. Born in England, Mr Blenklnsop came to New Zealand when he was four. This former seaman has served in many of the board’s harbour craft, but likes the new tug Canterbury best. The 62-year-

old veteran of several tug salvage tasks said that tradition was all right, but the new tug Canterbury had suited him. He has no immediate plans. ARRIVAL Hawea <9.2 a.m.),- 2926, Capt. M. B.
