Whales die in Kaipara
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, July 3.
Dead and rotting whales are worrying residents in the tiny township of Tapora, on the Kaipara Harbour.
Last week the Marine Department towed several dead whales from inhabited areas, but today a Tapora resident, Mrs W. D. Crompton, said that two dead whales were still close to her property.
"One whale is close to the boundary of our property about a quarter of a mile from the house,” she said. “I can smell it from the garden sometimes. I hope we can soon get rid of them.” She said the Marine Department was expected back to try to float and tow the dead whale away from the area. One whale had begun to disintegrate. The department’s district officer (Mr B. E. Turner) visited the area last week and arranged for a vessel to tow the whales away. He said that about 15 dead whales lay round the Kaipara shores, but most of them well away from where people lived.
