TENNIS Top women in N.Z. this year

(New Zealand Preu AttociUlonl WELLINGTON. Wellington will play host later this year for an open women’s tennis tournament in which Miss E. Goolagong and Mrs B. J. King are definite entries.

The tournament, which will be held in conjunction with another in Christchurch, was unannounced at the management committee meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association last night.

Miss Goolagong and Mrs King are presently ranked first and second in the world. Another leading figure in women’s tennis, Mrs N. Gunther, is also an entrant.

The vice-chairman of the committee (Mr 1. Wells) said last night that other possibilities for the tournament included Miss R. Casals and Mrs M. Court, as well as Misses K. Melville, H. Gourlay and K. Krantzcke.

Mr Wells said that because final arrangements about television coverage had not yet been settled, the order of venues for each of the tournaments had not been decided. However, the first will be held between November 16 and 19 and the second between November 23 and 26.

Most of the abovementioned plavers competed in Canterbury's tournament in Christchurch last season. The tournament produced a net profit of $6OOO and became the subject of a heated disagreement between Canterbury and the N.Z.L.T.A, when the provincial association refused to pav 15 per cent of the profit to the parent body. Benson and Hedges have .agreed to sponsor both tournaments, which will have a total prize list amounting |to about $l3OO. The association had already given Simpson a round the world air fare and $2OO expenses, but agreed tiiat since he was "extending his tour" the gesture would not be creating a precedent.
