Prisoner absconds
A prisoner who escaped from Paparua Prison yesterday was free for about seven hours before he was apprehended in a Christchurch hotel last evening. The prisoner, Edward Arthur Halligan, aged 52, absconded from the poultry farm at the prison where he was working as a semitrusted inmate. He was last seen at 1.30 p.m. and reported missing to the police at 4.30 p.m. Halligan was found by the police about 8.45 p.m., when patrol cars went to Tattersail’s Hotel, Cashel Street, after an anonymous telephone call. He was still wearing prison clothing. He will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning.
