TOP TRIAL LAWYER
Mr Melvin M. Belli, flamboyant and four times married, will arrive in Christchurch this week with the reputation of being the best trial lawyer in the United States.
Mr Belli, who has taken part in some of America’s most important criminal and civil cases—he was counsel for Jack Ruby (the man charged with shooting President Kennedy’s alleged assassin, Lee Oswald) and took part in the Salk polio vaccine cases—is on his honeymoon —with his fourth wife, Lia. He is the past-president of the American Trial Lawyers’ Association and founder and Dean Emeritus of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.
The author of 33 professional law books, Mr Belli is at present representing 40 German widows who are suing the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation as a result of Luftwaffe Starfighter crashes. Mr Belli's life and work are the subject of a biography and a film being made at present.
