Policemen admit thefts

Mooney, SJIL, today to two charges of theft and one of breaking and entering. j One of them also pleaded guilty to a further charge of ■ Pleas of guilty to earlier charges of breaking and entering were vacated, and charges of theft substituted, ctr application by counsel. Mr T. R. Gillies. Pleas of guilty were entered to the substituted charges. These charges related to one of three separate incidents. Detective Chief Inspector X A. McCarthy said the men, Alan David Moss, aged 27, and Robert Leslie Dennison, aged 28, committed the offences while on duty in car patrols. On the night of May 23 they entered the premises of Pye Electronics, Ltd, in Northway Street, Ta Rapa, through an unlocked door, said Chief Inspector McCarthy. There they found a quantity of electronic gear—an amplifier, three microphones, and four extension speakers, —which they took to their homes by police car.

On the night of June 36, the men, while on duty, entered the premises of the United Purchasing Company, in Te Rapa, through an unlocked door. They removed a quantity of tools and seven tyres. - On the same night, said Chief Inspector McCarthy, they broke and enter#! the freezer cabinet at the Tiki Bacon Company, Te Rapa. They had to remove the screws to enter the cabinet. A quantity of frozen food was taken from the cabinet. The goods involved in these chasgest wore worth $62440, said Chief Inspector McCarthy. Dennison was further

charged with the theft of a stainless steel tub, a stainless steel shower tray, and a shaving cabinet and mirror from a house under construction in Hamilton. ». Again, said Chief Inspector McCarthy, Dennison was on duty in a police car. He entered the building tiirough an unlocked door. Dennison told the police he wanted the materials for a block of flats he was building. The Magistrate convicted the men on all charges, renewed their bail, and remanded them to July 4 fbr sentence. » Mr Gillfes reserved bis submissions.
