Lyttelton woman’s interest is ships

Probably no other Canterbury woman knows more about shipping than an active Lyttelton octogenarian, Mrs Emily Lydia Harvey. Mrs Harvey makes regular visits to the city, but her horizon is dominated by her magnificent harbour view and ships. She reads - about ships daily and often glances through her photograph album of ships of other days. Her china collection includes fine Dresden and a wine glass from the Antarctic vessel Discovery. Mrs Harvey is not greatly impressed by all of the ships of today, some of which have a harsh design. She can discuss ships knowledgeably, particularly the attractive craft of other days. She speaks with authority and affection, for she lived aboard a coal bulk in Lyttelton harbour for 10 years, as a girl. When her father was appointed keeper of the coal hulk Darra, a former ' Orient Line passenger barque then owned by the Westport Coal Company, Ltd, Mrs Harvey was nine years old. In comfortable, private, quarters, the family lived simply, happily and securely. Their “home” moved about the inner harbour as ships required servicing, “Our life was rich, full and overflowing. We met people from all over the world. Our quarters were clean, spacious and tastefully furnished,” she said. “We grew violets outside in an old iron bath. Sometimes rats ate them. On Sunday evenings we went to church, then had musical evenings aboard with local clergymen, convent sisters and seafarers and we really lived. .There was no drink,” she said, Mrs Harvey recalls the Antarctic ships Nimrod, Terra Nova, Morning and Discovery, the Union Company’s graceful Rotomahana and dozens more.
