Paintings on show

Five paintings by a Palmerston North Teachers* College lecturer, Ray Thorburn, are being exhibited in the downstairs gallery of the Canterbury Society of Arts building. Mr Thorbum is a graduate of the Elam School of Art, University of Auckland. In 1971 he received a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council award that enabled him- to travel in Europe, Britain, and the United States. Mr Thorbum paints in an immaculate, hard-edge style, using grid patterns to set up mild optical effects resulting from reduced spacing of lines and subtle arrangements of tone on tone. By constructing his work in modules he avoids some of the hazards experienced by other hard-edge painters whdse work can suffer unmercifully at the Hands of unsympathetic packers and handlers. . Sma|l though his exhibition is, it offers a good insight into the nature of'his work. The exhibition will remain open until June 19. —G.T.M.
