Bleak night at Summit Road
Snow, sleet, high winds, and below-zero temperatures kept a Christchurch man awake most of Thursday night after his car slid 20ft down a bank on the Summit Road. Hector Lane, of 119 Francis Avenue, St Albans, spent more than nine hours in the back seat of the car, without his shoes or socks—which had been soaked in an
attempt to extricate his vehicle. Mr Lane said he started to turn his car round near the Sign of the Bellbird at midnight but the vehicle slid backwards, coming to rest against a fence below the road. In spite of placing rugs under the wheels and deflating the tyres, he was unable to move the car up the 45deg slope. Dressed only in jeans, jersey, and a parka, Mr Lane was unable to sleep; he ran
the car heater occasionally to keep warm, and listened to the car radio. It was not until after 9 a.m. yesterday that he got
help. A Parks and Reserves vehicle which passed by took Mr Lane the three miles to a telephone box at the Sign of the Kiwi.
