Air strike in N.Z. “pointless”

(New Zealand Frew Association) WELLINGTON, June 16. The Government was well aware of the .need for appropriate local and international legislation to deal with aircraft hijackers, said the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) today.

"The legislation which creates the various offences required by the three international conventions relating to hijacking has been prepared and will be introduced to Parliament this session,” he said. New Zealand had supported moves against hijacking at the United Nations, and was represented on the committee at the International Civil Aviation Organisation which prepared a draft convention on hijacking, said Mr Gordon. “It must be obvious that New Zealand airline pilots do not need to strike to persuade us of the need for world-wide action to stop this piracy of the air,** added Mr Gordon. “A stoppage at this time appears to be quite pointless.” "The Australian Federation of Airline Pilots has already called off its proposed strike. I will be disappointed if their New Zealand colleagues do not adopt a similar course,” the Minister added. WORD AWAITED New Zealand pilots should know tomorrow whether the international strike—6 pun. Monday to 6 pan. Tuesday, New Zealand time—is still being held. United Nations officials will meet executives of the Internationa] Federation of Airline Pilots’ Associations in New York tomorrow morning. The federation called the strike as a protest against

alleged inaction by the United Nations on aircraft hijackings. , In New Zealand, Air New Zealand, N.A.C., Mount Cook Airlines and Safe Air flights will .be affected. The international federation will call off the stoppage if the Security Council agrees to discuss aircraft hijackings. The president of the New Zealand Airline Pilots’ Association (Captain J. C. Priest, of Auckland), said tonight that the stand in New Zealand would in no way be affected by the decision of the Australian pilots not to support the ban.
