Leader for bridges

With 55,000 miles of road and 11,000 bridges, New Zealand leads the world under both headings on a per capita basis. While the most spectacular bridging achievements have taken place on state highways, county engineers have played their part in designing and building these vital links in the road network. Each year more than 500 bridges are designed and • constructed throughout the country. This means a new bridge is being put info service every 18 hours in some part of New Zealand. With one bridge to every five miles of road, engineers have had to overcome complex problems and bridge builders have several times established world records. The bridge across the mouth of the Haast River is the world’s longest truss bridge. The high bridge over the Kawerau Gorge near Queenstown, opened in 1964, is the world’s longest all-welded steel arch.
