bulk cargo of phosphate

A modem British bulk carrier, the Frumenton, owned by Chapman and Wlllan, Ltd, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, arrived at Lyttelton from Christmas Island on Saturday with a huge bulk phosphate cargo and drawing 34ft tin, a considerable draft.

The Frumenton, which has a gross tonnage of 16,702 tons (i.e., 100 eu. ft to the ton), has a deadweight capacity of 28,169 tons and her inward cargo amounted to 26,940 tons, according to her master, Captain A. D. Farrell, of Dungannon. Northern Ireland. From this bulk phosphate (cargo 6940 tons is being discharged at Lyttelton and the balance is for New Plymouth. Captain Farrell said that at Christmas Island he was told by officials that it was the largest bulk phosphate cargo loaded aboard ship there. Yesterday, Captain Farrell showed a news cutting of a wedding, a month ago, in Cookstown, County Tyrone, when his only son, Mr Thomas Farrell, married a childhood friend, Miss Elizabeth Devlin, sister of Miss Bernadette Devlin, who also attended the wedding. Captain Farrell said that his wife had written to say that nearly the whole town turned out for the occasion. Both bride and bridegroom hold bachelor of science degrees. Captain Farrell said that he had known the family for many years, including Miss Bernadette Devlin, and had the greatest respect for them. Although concerned about the Belfast situation, he "kept an open mind.” & 3: $

May 1 is a national holiday in Norway and at Lyttelton yesterday the Norwegian motor-vessel Tiber, owned by the Wllhelmsen Line, flew bunting on the foremast and mainmast. Only persons essential to maintain services worked on May Day, according to the master, Captain Rolf Andersen. sje

A 13,204-ton 21-knot French cargo liner, the Zeebrugge, now paying her first visit to Lyttelton to load refrigerated cargo, wool and tallow for Europe, is a sister to the Zambeze which called last year. A third vessel, the Zelande, not yet seen at Lyttelton, completes the trio. The master, Captain Y. Chevalier, said yesterday that the owner, Messageries Maritimes, Ltd, had dropped all passenger services on its world routes. ARRIVALS Zeebrugge (6.55 a.m.), 13,204. Capt. Y.
