LUCERNE PLANT
U.E.B. expands production (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 27. U.E.B. Industries, Ltd, would establish a $500,000 lucerne processing plant in central Hawke’s Bay to produce pellets and meal for the local and export markets, the deputy managing director (Mr G. S. Phillips) announced today. The company entered the lucerne industry with the acquisition of Marlborough Lucerne Meal Company, Ltd. A decision to establish the new plant was made after a study announced last November.
The factory will be built at Onga Onga, near WaiCukurau. It is expected to e in production by September, 1973, with an initial output of 8000 tons, compared with 13,000 tons a year by Marlborough Lucerne. The world demand for concentrated leaf protein as a food for cattle, pigs and poultry was growing rapidly, Mr Phillips said. The company expected a gradual expansion at Onga Onga after it began operating. Local farmers had shown keen interest in the project. Central Hawke’s Bay now had about 8000 acres in lucerne, but it was all used as a direct stock feed.
To supply the initial needs of the new factory an extra 1500 acres would have to be planted.
