Pretendre weanling brings $6250

(N.Z. Press Association)

HAMILTON.

A New South Wales buyer, Mr W. Turner, paid more than $BOOO for a colt and a filly by the boom sire, Pretendre, at the opening session of the annual Waikato Mixed Bloodstock Sale in Hamilton yesterday.

Mr Turner went to $6250 for a Pretendre colt from the Summertime mare, Summer Phase, which was offered by the Kinross Stud, Te Kauwhata.

He paid $l9OO for a filly by Pretendre from a La Beguine, an imported mare. The filly was offered on account of Mrs D. M. Margetts, of Hamilton. Pretendre, stood at Matamata on the property of American millionaire, Mr N. Bunker-Hunt until he was shipped to England recently.) Shortly after he came to New Zealand, Pretendre was represented in America by the sensational three-year-old, Canonero n, which won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, two of the major classic races in that country. The weanling colt and filly bought by Mr Turner were the only two of Pretendre’s progeny offered during the sale and are from his first New Zealand crop. The Pretendre colt, topped the weanling sale. The highest priced filly was by Oncidium from Golden Jenny, by Golden Plume, for which a Marton ownertrainer, Mr J. D. Georgetti, paid $4200. Mr Georgetti enjoyed considerable success with the Great Northern Oaks winner, Brazil, whom he also bought at a Waikato Sale. Of 135 weanlings offered, 103 sold for $93,200, an average of $904. 22 yearlings of 32 offered fetched $25,150, an average of $1143. The result of the sale was everything that might have been expected, the quality of the weanlings offered being especially pleasing. It was a notable feature that passings, generally the result of un-

realistic reserves and an annoying feature of earlier Waikato Sales, were this time down to a minimum. Detail* of »ales *6OO and above were:— On account F. Wilson, Walton: B c, Sagar Apple—Petite Rose. G. Smith (Te Rapa), agent 75C LW *
