STORM NAMES
Woman’s complaint (N.Z. Press Assn,—Copyright) MIAMI. The National Hurricane Centre in Miami has released 14 feminine names for this season’s storms. Mr Arnold Sugg, the assistant administrator of the Hurricane Centre, said names selected for storms during the 1972 season, from June to November, were: Agnes, Betty, Carrie, Dawn, Edna, Felice, Gerda, Harriet, Ilene, Jane, Kara, Mabel, Mae and Nadine.
Mr Sugg said the names were picked at random by a computer. "We haven’t had many complaints. Our mail from women runs about eight or nine-to-one in favour of feminine names. A lot of women even ask us to name hurricanes for them.” Woman’s Complaint
But Mrs Roxy Bolton says she has asked the National Weather Service to change its policy and find some other method of naming storms, but been ignored. “They just won’t change. They are too conditioned to this sort of thing and don’t realise they are casting a slur on women," said Mrs Bolton, a national vice-president of the National Organisation of Women. Mrs Bolton said she suggested storms be named after senators and congressmen, but a Weather Service official told her he thought the senators and congressmen would be insulted.
