PROTESTS ON TOUR
Poets, artists, Methodists (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 18. Twenty-six New Zealand authors, poets and artists have signed a statement sent to the United Nations Committee on Apartheid, deploring the “New Zealand Government policy amounting to an endorsement of racially selected sports". The statement is signed by Roderick Finlayson, Janet Frame, Charles Brasch, O. E. Middleton, Ralph Hotere, John Caselburg, David Ballantyne, Bill Pearson, Allen Curnow, Keith Sinclair, Kendrick Smythyman, Frank Sargeson, Maurice Duggan, Maurice Shadbolt, E. H. McCormick, Colin McCahon, Patrick Hanley, Alastair Campbell, Barry Mitcalf, Bruce Mason, Ann Holder, Jack Lasenby, Noel Hilliard, John Reece-Cole, Helen Shaw, and Hone Tuwhare. The Wellington Methodist Synod tonight decided to register non-violent protest if the tour eventuated. It also resolved to take the matter to its church congregations, and encourage the people to devise “creative ways” of declaring their opposition to the tour. The Auckland Methodist Synod tonight ureed the New Zealand Rugby Union either to demand a multi-racial Springbok team for the 1973 tour or to withdraw its invitation.
