Pompidou urges ‘yes’
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, April 6. The French Government has announced that the electorate will be asked on April 23 to give a straight "yes” or “no” to the question of the enlargement of the Common Market. Mr Pompidou sent a message to Parliament this afternoon to explain his referendum aims to deputies and senators, and to urge them to campaign for an overwhelming “yes” vote. The campaign poster selected by the Government portrays 10 happy and vigorous children surging forward with arms outstretched expectantly before them. Each child wears a shirt representing the national flag of one of the 10 member-nations of the enlarged Common Market. The slogan is: " ‘Yes’ to the future.” The French Communist Partv is strongly opposed to anv enlargement of the E.E.C., and its newspaper, “L’Humanite,” covered its front page today with the text of a statement bv the party leader, Mr Georges Marchais, alleging that the President of the E.E.C. Commission (Dr Sicco Mansholt) had “recommended organised poverty for the Community, through cuts in consumption and population.”
