RELIEF HINT
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 6. A hint that import licences for crockery and copper tube might be reduced soon was given today by the Minister of Customs (Mr Gair). Two applications had been received yesterday by the Comptroller of Customs asking for the reference of table earthenware, chinaware, porcelain and copper tube to the Emergency Protection Authority. “Prima facie cases have been made that indicate urgent action may be required to protect the local industries, and I have
agreed to their submission to the authority,” said Mr Gair. “We don’t know what the authority might recommend. But I must make it clear that if it recommends a change in the level of licensing protection and the Government accepts such a recommendation, only goods actually shipped at the time of the change will be admitted under the previous licences. “We would expect to reach such decision on both these cases well before the end of June,” said Mr Gair.
