Polish shipmaster had eventful war

A 52-year-old Polish born, but I British naturalised shipmaster I commands the British India steam Navigation Company’s 8199 1 ton Teesta, now loading refrig- 1 erated and general cargo, includ- I Ing wool, for Guam and Japan, I at Gladstone Pier. He is Captain Kazimierz Malawski, who now Uves in Durban with his South African wife and ■ daughter. He went to sea by accident, he said yesterday. At 18, Captain Malawskl was doing , general service with the Polish army. He was captured by the Germans during the defence of Warsaw, and imprisoned in East Prussia, but escaped on Christmas Eve. 1939. to Estonia. When the Russians occupied Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, he was captured while working on an Estonian farm, and imprisoned at TalUn. He was transferred to LeninSrad and subsequently to the readed Butyrki Prison, In Moscow, where he spent nine months on a charge of espionage, he was sentenced to 10 years hard labour. Captain Malawski worked in a Siberian forest and sawmill, but was released when Germany invaded Russia. By hitch-hiking, and asking for lifts in trains, trucks and drays, he reached Tashkent, and joined the Polish army of General Anders, recruited from Poles on Russian soU. He went with the army to the Middle East, where he volunteered for service with the Royal Air Force, and was then sent to the United Kingdom. But instead of the R.A.F. he joined the remnant Polish Navy, which had escaped to Great Britain. In 1947, he left the navjas a sub-lieutenant and joined the British India Steam Navigation Company in Singapore in 1947. In due course he passed all his certificates. In 1970. Captain Malawski obtained his first command. He is one of four Polish-born shipmasters in this company. One of his contemporaries. Captain J. R. Sokalski. of the Tanda, was in Lyttelton last January.
