Midland expansion
Midland Coachlines. Ltd, has acquired the property and plant of G. B. McWhinnie, Ltd, body builders and car painters, Riccarton Road, Christchurch. The managing director of Midland Coachlines (Mr L. K. Laugesen) said that the new business would trade under the name of Midland Panel Works. Chrysler moves Chrysler Australia, Ltd, will close its Port Melbourne plant late this year and move operations to Adelaide. The chairman and managing director (Mr D. H. Brown), said that production would be transferred to Adelaide while there was a “temporary lull” in vehicle sales. The Victorian Premier (Sir Henry Bolte) had been advised of the close-down, which would mean the dismissal of more than 500 workers.
