New import licensing provisions have been made to protect New Zealand’s textile and woollen industry while it is making changes to cope with market and fashion trends. The Minister of Customs (Mr Gair) announced a reduction in iiriport, licence allocation for woven woollen fabrics weighing more than sjozs a square yard and for woven synthetic piece goods weighing not less than 6ozs a square yard. Import licences on backed synthetic fabrics of under 6ozs had been reimposed. “Importers will receive an initial allocation of 50 per cent of their 1971 licences for woven woollen piece goods and 85 per cent of 1971 licences for synthetic piece goods over 6ozs,” he said. “The allocation for backed synthetic fabrics will be 50 per cent imports (expressed in square yards) made during the 1970/71 licensing year.” Goods shipped or confirmed by April 4 would be admitted under the previous exemption.
