Few at boxing annual meeting

Mr E. G. Pocock, aged 70, re-elected unopposed as president of the Canterbury Boxing Association at its annual meeting last evening, made it quite plain that he hoped for more assistance from his two vice-presidents and eight-man management committee and more practical help during his coming term of office. Mr Pocock, who has been either president or matchmaker for the association for the last two decades, and has spent both time and money promoting boxing in Canterbury and the South Island in particular, and in New Zealand in general, was addressing only 17 other members of the Canterbury association. “I hope that every member elected to the management committee will pull his fair share of weight,” said Mr Pocock. “I expect more than a wee bit more help of those elected.” Mr T. Wildes agreed with Mr Pocock and said that two

or three members had “carried” the association. Mr Wildes, a vocal critic of the Canterbury association for many years was not nominated in the election of officers. Messrs C. Wellman and W. Moore were unopposed as vice-presidents. Messrs H. Sutton, A. Fidow, J. Murray, W. Russell, M. Drury, E. Tolhurst and T. O’Brien were elected unopposed to the management committee. Mr Pocock, in his annual report, said that last year had not been very successful as far as amateur boxing had been concerned. That had been particularly the case concerning the seniors, but the association had taken boxers to various South Island centres and had sought opponents for senior boxers throughout New Zealand without much success. “We hope this coming year, with the Commonwealth Games in sight, that we can get our boys, the opponents they need to make experienced boxers of them,” he said.

- Some criticism of the lack r of bouts for senior amateur > boxers was expressed, but r the majority of members de- - fended Mr Pocock and his - management committee. Mr Drury criticised the ex- . elusion of Mr Wildes as a s judge last season. Mr Pocock . and other members denied , that Mr Wildes had been ex- • eluded from the Canterbury s panel of judges on instruc- ! tions from the New Zealand Boxing Council. The panel of. I judges for the C.B.A. for the I coming season would be api pointed by the incoming comI mittee. I Messrs Moore and Murray i said that the management : committee had found it diffii cult to work with Mr Wildes outside his work as a judge. The annual report showed: i that members’ subscriptions I had fallen from $126 to $73and showed an excess of ex» : penditure over income of $622. Total fixed assets and current assets for the financial year ending 1972 are shown as $lO4O, compared with $1284 for the previous year. <
