Hoax published in ‘The Times’

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON, April 6. Journalists employed by “The Times” have called for the reinstatement of the newspaper’s travel correspondent, John Carter, who was dismissed after the publication of an “April fool” hoax, the “Daily Telegraph” reports. Carter’s article said that, to celebrate its centenary, the British travel agent, Thomas Cook, was offering 1000 round-the-world tours for the 1872 price of 210 guineas (about $450). The report resulted in Cook’s switchboard being jammed with inquiries, and an apology from “The Times.” A meeting last night of National Union of Journalists’ members employed by “The Times” called for Mr Carter’s reinstatement Otherwise, the members said, they would pursue the matter through agreed grievance procedure.
