Southern wheat
Early wheat harvested ,in Southland this ■ season showed a very low average baking quality. But the director of the Wheat Research Institute (Mr R. W. Cawley) said this week that with the harvest now about three-quarters over in Southland, baking quality seemed to be slightly better than in the early stages, especially where the wheat came from round Gore. There have been a few samples showing sprout, but this has been about SI, which still means that the wheat qualifies for milling grade. The general manager of the Wheat Board (Mr L. C. Dunshea) said that its information also suggested that there had been an improvement in quality, the wheat from Gore and adjacent areas being higher in quality on the average than from other places. Mr Dunshea said that two shipments of lines of milling standard wheat had been made from Bluff to the North Island and the baking quality of these had been good, the grain scoring 35 and 36 respectively.
