Ballet based on ‘Anna Karenina’
The prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet, Maya Plisetskaya, will soon make her debut as a maitre de ballet She is now producing a ballet based on Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina,” at the Bolshoi Theatre.
Plisetskaya will dance the title role, alternating with Marina Kondratieva. Karenin will be danced by Nikolai Fadeyechev and Vladimir Tikhonov, and Vronsky will be shared by Maris Liepa and Alexander Godunov.
The music is bv Rodion Shchedrin, Plisetskaya’s husband. It was Shchedrin who rescored Bizet’s music for Plisetskaya’s famous “Carmen Suite.” The Bolshoi’s chief conductor, Yury Simonov, says the score is “apt, evocative and memorable.” Plisetskaya has had a special interest in Anna Karenina ever since she played Betsy in Alexander Zarkhi’s film version of the book in 1966. ; She later said that she en- ' joyed doing it, but it made
her lung all Uie mare to take part in a balletic version. The new ballet, she says, naturally omits many of the subsidiary episodes in 'the book. It consists of a series of “lyric scenes.’*
