Salad foods good purchases at market

Salad foods, corn, cauliflowers and some stone fruit have been the best purchases at the Christchurch produce markets this week. With the short week and long week-end, today is expected to be quiet.

Rain and cooler weather has brought on salad crops, cucumbers dropped from about $2.30 a case early in the week to as low as $1.20 yesterday, very good tomatoes were available at 5c to 9c lb, and lettuce dropped from $1.60 a case earlier in the week to 90c to $l. Capsicums were down yesterday to 20c to 30c per lb, potatoes brought $1.20 to $1.90 a case, sprouts 20c to 23c a lb, apple cucumber to $2 a case, cauliflower from $1.20 to $1.65 a case, and cabbage from 50c to 90c a case.

Carrots firmed in price to reach $2.15 a case, but beans went for 90c to $1.30 a case, leeks to $2.40, and parsnips between $1 and $l5O for a small case.

Corn, however, went for 40c to 60c a case.

Kidd’s Orange and Cox’s Orange apples are at their peak, and along with Kidd’s Red, Dunns (cooker-eater)

and Spartan went for $3.70 to $4.24 a case. Dessert pears brought about $3 a case, nectarines $l.BO to $3.20, peaches $1 to $1.70, and plums $1.60 to $2.70. Strawberries yesterday went for 18c to 24c a punnet, arid grapes brought 40c to 60c per lb. Californian oranges and Ecuadorian bananas were plentiful, and a line back after a long absence was Californian grapefruit
