Tour at end for Dowling
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) BRIDGETOWN. G. T. Dowling, the injured New Zealand cricket captain, will return home on Saturday. “I have no thoughts about retirement at this stage,” said Dowling, after the announcement. “As always, I will play it by ear and see what transpires. “The treatment 1 have had in Barbados has eased the pain in my back considerably and that gives me optimism that something can be done about the injury. “I am going home because I do not really see what useful purpose I can fulfill for the rest of the tour. It saddens me having to leave the ship at this stage.” B. E. Congdon, the vicecaptain, and captain in the third test, will take over as tour captain, said the manager, Mr M. E. Chapple. G. M. Turner win be promoted to vicecaptain. Dowling’s departure means that New Zealand will face the next strenuous <■ section of the tour with 14 players, not all of them fully fit and several at the point where * they should be rested. there are five matches to be played, including two tests.
