H.A.R.T. request not supported
Students at Lincoln College have voted against supporting the Halt All Racist Tours organisation and also against supporting H.A.R.T.’s campaign of non-violent disruption of certain sports fixtures. Both decisions were carried by a two-to-one majority.
The 250 students who attended the annual meeting of the Lincoln College Students’ Association had been asked “unreservedly” to support H.A.R.T. and specifically support the "non-violent disruption of every racist sports fixture held in New Zealand.” An attempt was made to amend the motion to “unreservedly oppose HA.R.T.” but this was ruled out of order. Heated discussion followed, during which the original motion was put to the meeting twice. It was lost both times, but its supporters claimed the motion had been unfairly put the first time. The students gave their
unamimous support, however, to the proposed centre for Maori studies and research at Waikato University. They had been asked to vose $2OO from their association funds to the centre, but decided instead the figure should be $4OO.
A motion opposing French nuclear tests in the Pacific was also carried unamimously. A division was called on a motion calling for the repeal of the National Military Service Act (1961) and the motion was lost
