More ships laid up
(HZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 23. Falling newsprint sales after a drop in advertising in Australian newspapers had caused the Union Steam Ship Company to lay up two freighters at Dunedin, a company spokesman said today. The 3200-ton Karepo and the 3532-ton Kawaroa have both signed off regular crews. Tne‘ Karepo has a small maintenance crew, and would be ready to sail if cargo came to hand. Today the sale of two Union Company ships was concluded, he said. The collier Kawatira and the freighter Kaimai—both laid up at Auckland—had been sold to Eastern interests.
Other Union Company ships laid up are the Tavenui, Waimate and Kurutai, at Auckland, and the Hohnwood and Squall, at Nelson.
