PACIFIC TESTS
Peruvians stand firm
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LIMA, March 23. There had been no change in Peru’s policy opposing French nuclear tests in the South Pacific, President Juan Velasco said today. “The position of our Government is definite,” he told a news conference in reply to a question about reports that France is preparing to resume tests on the Mururoa Atol, 4000 miles west of the South American coast.
The series of French tests last year gave rise to protests from several Southern Hemisphere nations, including Peru, which threatened to sever diplomatic relations with France if the tests continued.
President Velasco described Peruvian-French relations now as very good, recalling that a special French mission recently visited Peru, and that a Peruvian mission would travel to France soon to continue talks on co-operation between the two nations.
