Golden Queens
The Golden Queen peach is probably one of the best known of all the different varieties of peach at present grown here. This is in spite of a widespread preference for freestone varieties, rather than clingstone. Apart from its popularity with the housewife, it also has claims to be the major variety used by the processing industry. It originated as a seedling about 60 years ago from the Tauranga area, the discoverer reputedly getting a meagre £25 for the rights to perpetuate it. The fruit is large, golden yellow in colour and one of the last of the peaches to ripen; cropping is consistent and yields are well up with the very best of all the varieties. The tree is vigorous and will bear for a comparatively long time. Pruning generally does not present any problems.
