Charolais cattle bring $200,000

At the third Australasian Charolais sale held at Mandalong Park, St Marys, about 25 miles from Sydney yesterday, 50 head of South Island cattle, mainly from Canterbury, brought $196,200.

Sales were made at up to $25,000 for an in-calf 18months seven-eighth Charolais heifer from J. M. and J. H. M. Sutherland, the pioneer New Zealand Charolais breeders from Waimate, who sold 34 head for about $138,000. . Fifty-three head were sold at the sale, of which 50 were from New Zealand, and the average price this year at $3BOO was just twice that of last year when 27 head averaged $1913. The total proceeds of the sale yesterday were $201,500. The auctioneers for the sale, which was considered a very pleasing one, were Dalgety Australia, Ltd, in association with Pyne, Gould, Guiness Ltd, of Christchurch, and the Christchurch firm were represented at the ringside by Mr D. C. Gould, a director, and Mr G. A. Bruhns, a member of the stud stock department of the firm. Features of the auction were the sale of a seveneighth 18-months Charolais heifer, bred up from a Friesian, and in calf to a pure French Charolais bull, on account of the Sutherlands at $25,000; a seven-months-old pure Charolais heifer from the Craigmore Farming Company, of Maungati, South Canterbury, at $22,000; a six-months-old pure Charolais bull of French extraction, on

behalf of the Sutherlands at $21,000; and a six-months-old seven-eighth Charolais heifer, bred up from an Angus, also on behalf of the Sutherlands at $9OOO. The Sutherlands sold a pure bull at $21,000, a seveneighth bull at $2600,13 threequarter bulls at an average of $1450, two seven-eighth heifers for an average of $17,000, six three-quarter heifers for an average of $5458, and 11 half Charolais cows with calves at foot for an average of $2650. Craigmore Fanning Company had a pure Charolais heifer at $22,000 and two three-quarter heifers which averaged $4375. H. C. Miller, Ltd (Balclutha), sold one three-quarter heifer for $4750 and two half Charolais cows for an average of $2250.
