cism of the public, who appeared, for the most part, oblivious of the shocking conditions. I • will spare readers the details. Is the appropriate authority aware of the conditions I refer to? Do country amenities enjoy some immunity from the law? (I am sure such conditions would be condemned at Riccarton or Addington.) Do you consider such standards satisfactory? The rustic pleasure of a New Zealand country show or race meeting is far too valuable to be spoiled by this sort of barbarism—especially in 30 degrees C.—Yours, etc., POOH BEAR.

Chailies, health inspector for the Ellesmere County Council, replies: “It is necessary from time to time to upgrade facilities which become outdated, but, in order that patrons such as your correspondent may enjoy outings at country race meetings, it is only financially possible to improve these facilities over a period of time. The management company of the Motukarara

racecourse has previously been advised of improvements necessary to update facilities at the course and it has been planning and carrying out such improvements. The council has been assured that measures will be taken by the company to eliminate undesirable conditions such as those which arose during the last race meeting held on the course.”]
