YOUNG FARMER CONTEST PRAISED
Young farmers in New Zealand needed to be mentally alert and up to the minute in their knowledge of farming techniques and equipment, said Mr G. B. Robertson, of Methven, the immediate past president of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs’ yesterday. Mr Robertson was speaking at a function held to present a certificate of appreciation to Mr J. Collins, associate director of Skellerup Industries, Ltd, for his work in establishing and promoting the Skellerup National Young Farmer of the Year contest. “The contests sponsored by Skellerup Industries for which Mr Robertson has done so much organisation, have been most worth while in encouraging young farmers to keep up with the trends,” Mr Robertson said. If the future of New Zealand rested in the hands of young farmers, the country would be secure, said Mr Collins, when receiving the certificate. Mr Collins said that the
annual Young Fanner of the Year contest had grown considerably since it first began, when about 250 young fanners attended the contest; at the contest held in Hamilton last year, there were about 1600 young farmers present.
