Dutch vessel’s first visit

An 6744-ton Dutch motor vessel. th. Laarderkerk, which usually trades between Europe and the Persian Gulf, arrived at Cashin Quay yesterday morning from Wellington to load wool, pelts, hides, and other general cargo for Mediterranean ports. It is her first visit to Lyttelton.

The Laaderkerk is owned by NedUoyd Lines. Commanded by Captain A. de Graad, of Zeist, she has a crew of 32. Although most of the crew, are Dutch, there, are also some Spanish and Portuguese seamen because of the difficulty of recruiting seamen in the Netherlands. On the outward voyage, the Laarderkerk discharged' general cargo, and 185 vehicles, at Papeete and Noumea. She has already loaded homeward at Wellington, and after Lyttelton, will load at Timaru and Napier before leaving for the Mediterranean.

The trade to the Persian Gulf means experiencing very high , temperatures, but the Laarderkerk is air-conditioned. From Europe the Laaderkerk and other vessels of the company, take machinery and supplies for the oil companies there. On passage home to Europe, cargo is loaded at Indian ports. ♦ ♦ * At Lyttelton yesterday, the newly arrived Danish motor vessel Chilean Reefer discharged about 20,000 cartons of bananas from Ecuador.
