DERBY HEATS Hondo Grattan was only one second outside the track record set. by Halwes for 111 furlongs when he won his heat of the Pacers* Derby at Harold Park last Friday. He paced the distance in 2mln 56 3-ssec, a mile rate of 2min 2 4-Ssec, equalling Frosty Monarch’s track record for a three-year-old. Hondo Grattan beat Adlos Victor by seven yards, with a yard to Jason King (Lordship— Nicotine Prince (Smokey Hanover—Hindu Princess) won the second heat at a mile rate of 2mln 7 l-3sec. Bold Blam was second, clear of Royal Topaz (Goodland—Quiet Ways). P. J. Hall, who returned from the yearling sales in Christchurch earlier in the evening, won the other heat with Royal Calypso (Ike Frost—Hot Number), one of the big team owned by Messrs J. H. and R. W. Ingham. Roydon Roux finished fourth in this heat after having every chance and did not qualify for the final. The winner’s mile rate in this heat was 2mln 4 4-ssec. Manaroa, starting at 2 to 1 on, made his rivals look second rate in the Hurricane Stakes, run over nine furlongs and a half. He took the lead after 100 yards and won untested by four yards from Just So, with a similar break to Deep Court. Valencia was fourth, two places tn front Of Hundred Pipers. Manaroa recorded a mile rate of 2min 3sec, and his time of 2min 26sec was only 3.ssec outside Bay Foyle’s track record.
