Reid drawn to play Grocott
The former test captain, J. R. Reid, will play a member of the host EastShirley club, J. W. Crocott, in his firstround match in the Shirley Lodge single-wicket tournament at Burwood Oval on Sunday.
The meeting will be the last match of the first round, and the winner will go on to play an off-spinner, the winner of the game between M. L. Ryan and another former test player, M. B. Poore.
Another highlight of the bottom half of the draw will be the game between W. A. Thomson and J. W. Kiddey, who this week announced his retirement from senior cricket.
"We thought it was appropriate Kiddey should play in the tournament the day after he plays his last senior game,” said the EastShirley chairman (Mr N. G. Ockwell).
The other Wellington player, J. F. M. Morrison, will play J. W. Burtt, and the winner will meet the winner of the G. A. BartlettK. I. Ferries game. Several years ago, the latter two players provided one of the most exciting games in the history of the tournament, although Bartlett was out without scoring. Ferries did not score the run required until the last ball.
The tournament starts at 12.30 p.m. with the game between the high-scoring East-Shirley player. P. G. Coman, and the young P. E. McEwan (Old Collegians),
who recently left St Andrew’s College. The remainder of the draw, in order, is:— K. Thomson v. R. J. Hadlee, Burtt v. Morrison, Bartlett v. Ferries, W. A. Thomson v. Kiddey, C. L. Bull v. N. M. Pitches, Ryan v. Poore, Reid v. Grocott.
