Carpenter sells Fiji island
The owner of an American magazine, Mr Malcolm Forbes announced that a preliminary contract had been signed for purchase of the island of Laucala, Fiji; the island is to .be turned into a South Pacific meeting centre for business executives. The 53-year-old president of Forbes Magazine, a business publication, said the $1 million deal would be completed by the end of this month. The 3017 acre island is being purchased from the Australian W. C. Carpenter Company subsidiary, Morris Hedstrom Ltd. Mr Forbes said the big copra plantation on the island would remain in operation and work would begin immediately on building an airstrip.
