Muskie in lead

(N.Z.P.A.’Reuter—Copyright) CHICAGO, March 22.

Senator Edmund Muskie claimed victory over the former Senator, Mr Eugene McCarthy, in the Illinois Presidential primary election, refurbishing his attempt to win the Democratic nomination. The 57-year-old Maine Senator held 63 per cent of the vote against Mr McCarthy’s 37 per cent with 55 per cent of the vote counted—a margin which, if maintained, would help to cloak his defeat in the Florida primary and his lack-lustre performance in New Hampshire.

Senator Muskie told his jubilant supporters as he held more than a 50,000vote edge late last night: “We have won Illinois.”
