WELLINGTON, March 8. An independent trust to support a lectureship in nursing studies at Victoria University has been set up in Wellington. The trust, named the C. L. Bailey Nursing Education Trust, also alms to continue to provide bursary assistance, if funds allow, to registered nurses seeking appropriate post-basic nursing education at a university. The course is proposed as a stage three in nursing studies, to be available to nurses as part of a B.A. degree. Registered nurses would study social science subjects such as psychology, sociology and education, taking one of these to stage 111 also. The trust honours Professor Bailey, who recently retired as head of the department of education at Victoria i University. He has had a life-1 long interest in nursing. 1 He tried for many years to i have higher education for i
nurses established within a university. Professor Bailey began a 30-year association with nursing “gladly and to render thanks—to my mother,
who was a nurse, and to the generations of devoted and dedicated women who stand at the great threshhold of life.” In the Victoria University proposal, a unit known as nursing studies will be included as a major subject towards a B.A. degree. However, because the proposal falls between the university quinquennial grant years, 1970-1975, outside funds will have to be raised. The trust’s immediate aim is $50,000. Already it has received $ll50 —before the project is officially launched. Nurses have been the main contributors.
