Titian stolen

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ANCONA (Italy) March 7.

Two paintings valued at more than $2.14 million, including a crucifixion by Titian, have been stolen from a church in this Italian Adriatic port, police said. The crucifixion, painted by the Venetian master in 1562, was removed from its frame behind the high altar in the church on San Lorenzo.

A painting by Guercino (1591-1666) of the annunciate was also taken from its frame above the main entrance door of the church. The thefts came at a time when police in Ancona are st?'i busy getting the city back to normal after a series of earth tremors which caused a mass evacuation and damaged many old buildings. The Archbishop of Ancona (Mosignor Carlo Maccari) who visited the church, told reporers he deplored the thefts which had taken place “at such a delicate moment in the citys life.”
